Psalms 38: Honest suffering

A Psalm like 38 seems very depressing to modern readers.  We are conditioned to stay positive and to keep our emotions to ourselves.  When we see the refreshingly honest cries of suffering in the Psalms, we are taken aback.  How dare David cry out to God?  How dare David show his weakness!  But in David’s cry for help, we know that we too can cry out for mercy.  The God who showed mercy to David will also show mercy when we cry out for help.
